Memories from Worshipful Brother John Gregory Boyd
We met in the old part of the Elks Lodge and that is where I received all three of my degrees. Glen Vallery and I were initiated together on the
same night. Of course, the first section was given separately and I had to sit outside in my car while they did Glen's first section. We then got the Lecture and Charge together.
CC and June Haymond donated an acre of land next to the Elk’s Lodge about two and a half years after the Lodge formed. I remember the excitement when the Haymonds offered the acre to us. We were all thrilled to be able to get our own Lodge building, but it took a while. We all pitched in to help build it. Pat Patterson, Vi's husband was the contractor in charge.
The snow that caved in the Lodge was 73 inches in eight days. It also caved in at least seven other buildings in the Slow Low and Pinetop-Lakeside area but no one was hurt. I have some pictures of town but not of the Lodge.
A few years later, we were working in front of the lodge. We observed the outside was getting a little wear and tear. I suggested we face it
with slump block that Brother Buck Sumerlin had started making at his new plant. We brought the idea before the Lodge, received approval, and that is how we got it faced.
Some notable achievements of our members were:
Brother David C. Porter - Mayor of Show Low
Brother Paul Frey - Vice Mayor of Show Low
Brother J. Gregory Boyd - Chairman of Planning and Zoning Commission of Show Low Chairman of Navapache Hospital District Board of Directors
Brother Hal Butler - Member of Navajo County Board of Supervisors,State of Arizona Highway Commission
Brother Gary Butler - Sheriff, Navajo County
Brother Buck Sumerlin - Vice Mayor of Show Low
Brother Lloyd Hill single-handed caught a bank robber as he ran out the old Valley National Bank on the Deuce of Clubs (the main street in Show Low). Brother Lloyd was driving by, saw him running out of the bank, whipped around, caught him, and arrested him on the spot.
